Cruising From St. Louis: New Orleans vs Galveston vs Florida

Quick answer: From St. Louis and the Metro East, New Orleans is the easiest drive-to cruise port, about 10 hours down I-55. Galveston has the most ships and newest options but is a longer drive, about 13 hours. Flying to Florida gives you the most cruise choices and the shortest travel time, but adds airfare and a hotel night.

As a travel advisor based in Swansea, Illinois, this is the question I get from almost every local client. We don't have an ocean, but we have great options. Here is how to choose.

Option 1: Drive to New Orleans

  • Drive: About 680 miles, roughly 10 hours via I-55

  • Cruise lines: Carnival (largest presence), Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and seasonal Disney sailings

  • Where they go: Mostly Western Caribbean: Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Progreso

  • Parking: About $25 per day at the official port garages, so roughly $175 for a 7-night cruise. Nearby private lots and some downtown hotel packages cost less.

Why choose it: No flights, no luggage limits, and you can add a night in the French Quarter before or after your cruise. Many Carnival sailings are 4 to 7 nights, which suits first-timers.

Option 2: Drive to Galveston

  • Drive: About 880 miles, roughly 13 hours

  • Cruise lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Disney and Princess, with Margaritaville at Sea arriving in October 2027

  • Where they go: Western Caribbean and Mexico, with some longer Eastern Caribbean sailings

  • Parking: Official port parking runs roughly $20 to $35 per day depending on the lot. Reserve online in advance.

Why choose it: Galveston has newer and bigger ships than New Orleans, including Carnival Jubilee, Norwegian Viva, MSC Seascape and Symphony of the Seas. Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas is scheduled to join Galveston's lineup in 2027.

Tip: Break the drive into two days or plan a hotel night near the port. Don't drive 13 hours the morning of your cruise.

Option 3: Fly to Florida

  • Flights: Nonstop flights from St. Louis Lambert to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Miami are common

  • Ports: Port Canaveral (Orlando), PortMiami, Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) and Tampa

  • Where they go: Everything: Bahamas, Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean, plus private islands like Perfect Day at CocoCay and Celebration Key

Why choose it: The widest choice of ships, itineraries and private destinations, and the least time in the car. You can also pair a cruise with Disney World or Universal Orlando.

Tip: Always fly in the day before your cruise. A delayed flight should never cost you your vacation.

Which is cheapest?

For a family of four, driving usually wins because you avoid four airline tickets and checked bags. For a couple, flying can cost about the same as driving once you add gas, a hotel night and parking, and it saves you two long days in the car.

Bonus option: Mobile, Alabama

Carnival also sails from Mobile, about a 10-hour drive from St. Louis. Ask me if a Mobile sailing fits your dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest cruise port to St. Louis? New Orleans and Mobile are the closest ocean cruise ports, each roughly a 10-hour drive.

Can I take a river cruise from St. Louis? Yes. Some American river cruise lines sail the Mississippi, a great option for a different kind of trip.

Should I fly or drive to my cruise? Drive if you're a family on a budget heading to the Western Caribbean. Fly if you want the Eastern Caribbean, private islands or the widest choice of ships.

Do I need a passport if I drive to a U.S. port? On a closed-loop cruise, usually not, though it is recommended.
