Military and Veteran Cruise Discounts: A Veteran's Guide
Quick answer: Most major cruise lines offer something for military members and veterans. Norwegian has the most consistent discount, about 10% year-round. Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer special military rates on select sailings. Princess gives up to $250 in onboard credit. Eligibility and proof requirements differ by line, so check before you book.
As a military veteran and travel advisor, this topic is personal for me. Many service members, veterans and military families near Scott Air Force Base and across the country don't realize these discounts exist, or they assume they're always the best deal. Here's the straight scoop.
Military and veteran cruise benefits by line
Cruise line | Benefit | Who qualifies | How you verify |
|---|---|---|---|
Norwegian | 10% off year-round, up to 20% on select sailings; stacks with Free at Sea | Active duty, veterans, retirees and spouses | ID.me |
Carnival | Special military rates on select sailings; amount varies | Active and retired military; check terms for veterans | Documents after booking |
Royal Caribbean | Military rates on select sailings; amount varies | Active duty, Guard and Reserve, retirees, and veterans meeting service requirements | Military ID or DD-214 at check-in |
Princess | Up to $250 onboard credit per qualified guest, based on cruise length | Veterans plus active, retired and disabled military | SheerID |
Disney | Special military rates on select sailings; $250 onboard credit on select 2026 Wish and Dream sailings | Active duty, retirees, Guard and Reserve, and spouses | Military ID at check-in |
Celebrity | Up to about 10% on select sailings | Active duty and veterans | Proof of service required |
MSC | Up to 10% off balconies and suites, 5% off inside and oceanview | Active and retired U.S. and Canadian military | Proof of service required |
Who counts as a veteran?
It depends on the line. Norwegian, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Princess generally extend benefits to veterans with an honorable discharge, verified with a DD-214. Royal Caribbean has listed a minimum service requirement for veterans, such as two years of service or six months in an active war zone. Disney's military rates focus on active duty, retirees, Guard and Reserve, so not every veteran qualifies.
Is the military rate always the best deal?
Not always. Here is what many people don't know:
Some military rates don't stack. Royal Caribbean often makes you choose between the military rate and other offers like Kids Sail Free.
Some military rates match public sales. During wave season, a public promotion can beat a military fare.
Some stack nicely. Norwegian's military discount combines with its Free at Sea perks, which is a strong value.
That's why I compare the military rate against every public promotion before booking. You get whichever is better.
Bonus military perks
Port parking: The Port of New Orleans offers free cruise parking (up to 7 days) for Louisiana-resident disabled veterans who meet its requirements.
Onboard veterans' gatherings: Many lines host veterans' meetups on sailings near Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Redeployment protection: Some lines, like MSC, offer future cruise credit if you are redeployed. Ask about this when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse use my military discount? Often yes. Norwegian lets spouses verify through ID.me, and several lines extend rates to spouses sailing with or without the service member.
Can I combine a military discount with other promotions? Sometimes. Norwegian allows stacking with Free at Sea, while Royal Caribbean usually does not.
Do Canadian veterans qualify? Many lines, including Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean, include Canadian Armed Forces members. Disney's military rates are U.S. only.
